Le travail artistique de Mathieu s’est développé au grès d’expérimentations, de concours et d'installations. À travers son métier d'architecte, sa pratique de la peinture et de l'illustration, il tend à explorer la limite tenue entre les notions de « paysage » et « geste de l'homme ». Ce seuil vaporeux est au cœur de cette recherche entre confrontation, puissance et résilience.
Mathieu’s artistic work has developed through a series of experimentations, contests and installations. Through his work as an architect, his painting and illustrations, he explores the boundary between the notions of ‘landscape’ and ‘human behaviour. His research is focused on this blurred threshold between confrontation, power and resilience.

Fossile

Fossile est une œuvre en deux temps, il s’agit d’abord d’une spirale composée de piquets de bois brûlé. Cette empreinte dans le paysage vise à initier un dialogue primitif avec la région volcanique et à agiter notre imaginaire collectif et individuel sur des thématiques archaïques, environnementales et spirituelles. Dans un second temps, il s’agit d’un parcours accompagnant le visiteur au centre de la spirale, où un sol d’écorce de cèdre rouge vient habiller le cœur et contraste avec le noir carboné du bois. Ici, la relation essentielle entre l’homme et le paysage prédomine tant dans l’approche constructive que dans la signification.
En utilisant des gestes constructifs rudimentaires, l’œuvre converse avec le paysage et bâtit
un échange intemporel.

Fossile is an artwork with a dual purpose. First of all it is a spiral made up of stakes of charred wood. This imprint in the landscape aims to strike up a primitive dialogue with the volcanic region, and to trigger our imagination, both individual and collective, on archaic, environmental and spiritual topics. Secondly, it is a trail that guides the visitor to the centre of the spiral, where the ground is covered in red cedar bark, contrasting with the black shades of the charred wood. Here, the essential relationship between mankind and the landscape prevails, just as much in the way the creation has been put together, as in its meaning. The artwork interacts with the landscape and forms a timeless dialogue, in using the most basic construction techniques.
